Iowa City Animal Center Introduces Low Cost Spay/Neuter Program

As most of you know, the best defense against the heartbreak of animal homelessness is public education about the importance of spay and neuter.  But for some, education is not enough.  Many Johnson County residents are unable to pay the full cost of a spay or neuter surgery for their companion animals, especially if they are dealing with a litter of critters.  Paws to Assist is a program developed by the Iowa City Animal Center to help address this problem.

What is Paws to Assist?
Paws to Assist is a new program that promotes spay and neuter of companion animals in Johnson County via low cost surgeries.  The program assists low income households, and in some circumstances can assist people in rural areas who have numerous animals.

How do I know if I qualify?
The need for financial assistance is determined on a case by case basis using state and federal low-income guidelines, or by meeting one or more of the following criteria:

How do I apply?  Is there an application fee?
Paws to Assist applications can be picked up at the Iowa City Animal Center, 111 Kirkwood Avenue.  The Center is open Monday through Friday from 10:30 to 5:30, and on Saturday from 10:30 to 3:00.  The Center is closed on Sundays and holidays.  You can also call the Center at 356-5295 to request an application.  There is no application fee.

Who does the surgery & where?
In most cases Dr. Jennifer Doll, who is the primary veterinarian for the Animal Center, will perform the surgeries at the Animal Center, 111 Kirkwood Avenue.  Exceptions can be made if bringing an animal to the Center is difficult, or when there are numerous animals.

How much will it cost me?
Prices vary depending on the species, sex and size of the animal.  The program participant will typically pay between $15 and $25 to spay or neuter a cat, and between $33 and $50 for a dog.

Is transportation provided?
No, transportation is not available at this time.  If transportation is an issue please call the Center at 356-5295.

Can I bring my animal by any time?
All participants in Paws to Assist must fill out an application.  Once the application is approved, you can schedule an appointment.
